Known as “America’s Finest City,” San Diego california is a popular vacation destination, with beautiful beaches, mild weather and a variety of things to do. This sunny vacation paradise also has plenty of fun things for kids and families. Whether you’re visiting for a long weekend or a week, here are some of our favorite things to do in San Diego.
Go on a Sightseeing Bus Tour to get familiar with the city’s highlights
When you’re visiting a new place, one of the best ways to quickly become accustomed to it is to take a walking tour. Often, these tours can be booked ahead of time and are a great way to discover the key attractions of a city.
There are a number of different walking tours available in San Diego, depending on your interests. From the historical Gaslamp Quarter to Balboa Park, you’ll find many options to suit your needs.
If you’re a fan of baseball, you’ll want to check out Petco Park, the home stadium for the Padres. There are a number of tour options available to see exclusive areas, including the press box, the dugout and the player’s tunnel.
Take a Hike through Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve
The Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve is one of the most breathtaking hiking spots in all of Southern California. Its trails are a gorgeous and peaceful place to enjoy the outdoors, with scenic views of San Diego’s oceanfront coastline.

There are many different local craft breweries to choose from when you’re in San Diego, each with its own unique brewing style. A brewery tour is a great way to learn about the different types of beer and how they are made.
You can even buy beer from the brewery to drink in or to bring back with you!
Embark on a Wild Animal Safari at San Diego Zoo or Safari Park
The San Diego Zoo is the most popular attraction in the city, with a huge range of animals to see. While it is a bit more expensive than the zoos in other cities, it’s still a worthwhile trip for the whole family to enjoy.
It’s home to more than 3,000 animals, ranging from lions and elephants to California condors. You’ll also be able to interact with the animals as you go on the zoo’s tours and see them up close.
While you’re at the zoo, be sure to also check out Birch Aquarium, which is located in a beautiful hilltop location on La Jolla shores. It’s home to over 3,000 different fish and other marine creatures.
For those who like a little history with their adventure, the USS Midway is definitely worth checking out. Originally built as an aircraft carrier, this ship has seen action in World War II and Operation Desert Storm.
A visit to this historic relic includes a self-guided audio tour narrated by former sailors, as well as a number of different information panels, volunteer-led talks and videos. You can also try out a flight simulator if you’re feeling adventurous!
